AREA INFORMATION

ABOUT THE AREA:
These areas are fairly reliable! With the exception of Cucumber Falls which I havn't seen come in since the '01-02 ice season! The climbs are shorter in length, but usually leadable. The accessability and that fact that its mostly roadside makes it a popular place to visit.

GETTING THERE:
To get to the ice, Get off the PA Turnpike at Exit 9 (Donegal) Take 31 East to Route 711 North. Follow 711 North to Normalville. At the intersection in Normalville, Turn left and follow to Ohiopyle. Cross the tracks and the first bridge over the Yough river. You are in Ohiopyle these are the main climbing areas...

AREA #1 - Lower Meadow Run

TO THE ICE:
Pass the Dairy Queen and cross the bridge heading out of town towards Route 40. Park at the lot on your left after crossing the bridge. The small stream down over the steps is Meadow Run. If you park facing Meadow Run, you will see the ice up on the rock band above the stream. Hike back across the bridge to get on the other side of Meadow Run and follow the rock band back to the ice formations.

Routes:
At MeadowThere are only a handful of routes here, but when in they're good routes. Most routes are about 25-35' tall. some being shorter. There is usually some great mixed climbing to try with fangs hanging from the roof above.

AREA #2 - Upper Meadow Run

TO THE ICE:
From the parking (2 options) Option 1 - Go down the steps to Meadow Run stream. Follow upstream on the parking side to the ice seveal hundred yards. Option 2 - Follow the main road uphill several hundred yards to the first bend. Follow the sometimes obvious trail down over the hillside to the stream and ice. Watch for the Mountain Laurel patch to mark the hike down over the hill to the stream and ice.

NOTE: The ice is located down at the stream below some large boulders and is not visible from the road or trail. Skirt the large boulder blocks down the steep hillside to the ice. Keep looking its there!

Routes:
One main flow of ice. Usually has a steeper section and an easier section. The flow is about 30' wide and about 40' tall. Trees at the top to rig or rappel from.

AREA #3 - Cucumber Falls

TO THE ICE:
After crossing the above mentioned bridge, Turn right and continue out the road approximately 1/2 mile to the parking area for Cucumber falls on your right. Follow the trail down to the ice.

Routes:
Cucumber falls NEI 4- is a wide flow approximately 35' tall. It forms a wierd cone at the bottom and is completely free standing. You can actually hike in behind the ice and listen to the erie sound of the water crashing down in the center of the column. Usually barely bonded at the top, it makes for an interesting top out!
