.....NEW YEARS DAY OUTING 2002.....

The Hill Flow - New Years Day 2002 in SWPA

This year was no different than any other. We managed to "poach" a new unclimbed area in rare condition. The climb itself was about 120' tall Tom Kopler and I went in early morning fashion to hit this unclimbed area. After the 45min approach, we rapped down a 120' Grade 2 gulley to the top of the actual climb. Photo #1 Tom Kopler on the way down into the climb. We setup an anchor and finished the rap into the base of the climb. Once at the bottom it was cold (about 5 degrees), but we both had a smile on our faces. Photo #2 Tom Kopler with a smile on his face? We checked out the other possible lines around and saw some incredible mixed stuff, but had our eyes set on the tallest, thickest ice there. Photo #3 some mixed climbs. I put on my belay coat and Tom went first climbing the long line he mentioned that he had a pump going on! We both made several climbs up this incredible find and called it a day. The ice wasn't as thick as I'd like, but looking back on the season - It was the best we had! Most of all it was a fun adventure with a great friend! Photo #4 Tom on the first route. I've been back only one other time this season with Dave Lynn, but the ice was very thin and less secure than before. Hopefully next year will produce colder temps and better ice climbing! -Tim
